Areas of science: Environmental Toxicology, Aquatic Toxicology, Marine Biology, Shellfish for Aquaculture.
Discovery made: New type of chemical pollutants hazardous to marine life, to shellfish, to aquaculture.
New fact:
All main types of foam-producing man-made chemicals are poisons to shellfish, marine mussels. These chemicals decreased normal filtration rate and water filtering by the bivalve mollusks.
Why this new fact is important:
Decreasing the filtration rate means decreasing the removal of cells of phytoplankton from water. As a result, the marine ecosystem function is broken, and water quality goes down.
In life, where these chemical to be found: these chemical are the main components of laundry detergents, shampoos, dish washing liquids, all types of detergents...
Who counducted this research?
Scientists of two istitutions with excellent scientific reputation: Moscow State University (the best university of Russia and a large part of Eurasia), and Plymout Marine Laboratory, one of the best in United Kingdom.
