In Mali, Soldiers Torture Detainees

“After selling two cows, I headed to the market to buy provisions before returning to my village,” a 36-year-old man told Human Rights Watch. “On the way a friend warned me the soldiers were arresting Tuaregs, so I ran to hide in a friend’s house until they passed. But they saw me…”

In January, Mali’s army, together with French and other African soldiers, recaptured northern Mali from Islamist armed groups. But instead of restoring security, some Malian soldiers committed abuses. Human Rights Watch recently interviewed seven ethnic Tuareg men who were tortured by Malian forces near Timbuktu because they were suspected of supporting the Islamist rebels. 

The 36-year-old went blind in one eye after being clubbed in the face with a gun butt. Another man went partially deaf after being kicked repeatedly in the head. Two men were beaten unconscious, and all had scars on their wrists from the tight cords that bound them.
