White Dog tentatively stuck her head through the dog door, then turned around to report to the Army lined up behind her, "All clear! No overnight snow. Everything is dry." With that everyone filed out to take care of morning business.
Thursday's surprise snow cover was gone...melted everywhere except in the farthest corner reaches of the yard that are in constant shade. It was still cold, too cold for any pup to really want to stay outside long. And certainly too cold for the White Dog Army to ride along and wait in the car while we ran errands.
So we agreed that Steve and I would go out and do the things that must be done...pick up pills at the pharmacy, duck jerky at Costco, stop at the Post Office...and we would return with something yummy for the WDA's lunch.
"But not tacos," White Dog added as a caveat. "Too easy a choice. Bring something unusual that we will LOVE!" "Great," I muttered to Steve as we left the house. "Now anything in styrofoam isn't good enough; we have to appeal to the Army's exotic tastes!"
In Costco Steve went down the cheese aisle. "What about a nice assortment of cheeses and a baguette?" I looked at him blankly. "For the dogs for lunch?" "No, we had brie and apples waiting for you the other night." "Liver sausage sandwiches?" "Not good for Quinn's pancreatitis. I cannot believe we are agonizing over this. Do you think our WDA is a bit spoiled?" We both laughed.
"Bagels with cream cheese and lox? I wouldn't mind that for lunch either." Steve continued. "Sure but what do we get for dessert?" I answered and then smacked my forhead. We had THREE bags of duck jerky in the cart. Too late, Steve was already adding cinnamon swirl pound cake to our collection.
What have we created I wondered as we piled our purchases on the conveyor at the checkout...more than half of the items were for the White Dog Army. "I hope White Dog approves of lox and bagels," I said poking at Steve. "We don't have a backup plan." "Do you think we should?" he asked seriously.
"If the White Dog Army is not happy with what we have brought, let them eat cake!" I replied in my most Marie Antoinette voice.
