White Dog and The White Dog Army heard us discussing a plan several weeks ago to change the look at the front entry of our home. We are going to remove the bright blue bench that sits on the landing which is peeling and in need of structural repair. In its place under the front room windows we are going to assemble a container garden of herbs.
The WDA saw that a small organic and heirloom seed company was offering a special deal on seeds with the added bonus of a portion of each sale going to help the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance. We could not refuse and ordered rosemary, basil, chive, dill, thai basil, and a few other packets of herb seeds. They arrived during the week.
Today the White Ones and I prepared small paper cups with hydroponic growing crystals in which we will plant the seeds. The plan is to put them in the south facing windows until the seeds sprout and develop a root system. Then we will transplant them to newspaper cups filled with growing medium and encourage the seedlings to become healthy plants before moving them out to the containers.
The sixty degree temperatures and singing birds had us focused on the arrival of Spring as we drove through town in search of "just the right" containers. We did not find the exact "IT" yet but Steve and the WDA almost have me convinced to paint my own terracotta planters. "Let's see what we can find that is glazed and colorful first," I countered. "If we don't find perfect shapes and colors by the time the sprouts go into the growing medium, I will paint."
We were just settling down after our adventure when Becks and Josh came in, talking about their plans to put in flowers in their soon-to-be house next door.
I heard White Dog mutter under her breath, "Copycats," and nudged her. "Don't complain about adding new beauty to the neighborhood. Think of the butterflies and hummingbirds they will attract."
Ahhh Spring!
