2013 is the Year of the Snake!
This may seem slightly ominous to Westerners (especially Gryffendors), but in Chinese astrology, the snake symbolizes thoughtfulness and wisdom, logic and thinking. People born in the Year of the Snake are not supposed to act rashly and carelessly.
So, yes, bring on the Year of the Snake! We could use a little more careful thinking and wisdom, couldn't we?
From enormous fireworks displays in Hong Kong to red envelopes sold in San Francisco's Chinatown, for giving money to children...
...from the beautiful Lantern Festival in Taiwan to dance parades in Washington, D.C., and in Beijing, China...a whole lot of celebration happens here, there, and everywhere that Chinese people have settled.
...(which probably aren't nearly so thoughtful as astrological snakes)
