Studies of fundamental interdisciplinary issues and problems of biospheric sciences: ecology, environmental science.
This is a short review and comment on some publications [1- 4]. In these publications, the author, a researcher at Moscow State University, provided results of his studies on interdisciplinary issues of ecology and environmental sciences.
The experimental work of this author included studies of a number of chemicals (surfactants, detergents, heavy metals, some pesticides) and their interactions with organisms as diverse as bacteria (e.g., Hyphomonas), cyanobacteria, green algae, diatom algae (e.g., Thalassiosira pseudonana), flagellates (Euglena), higher plants (both aquatic and terrestrial plants, e.g., Fagopyrum esculentum, Oryza sativa, Sinapis alba, et al.), invertebrates (mollusks, e.g. Mytilus, Crassostrea, Unio, Lymnaea, and annelids, e.g. Hirudo medicinalis).
In the book [1 ] in several tables he provided lists of the new facts he discovered. His experimental work led him to creating new useful and consistent conceptualization of the multi-functional role of aquatic organisms (hydrobionts) in water self-purification (e.g., book [2 ] and a series of relevant papers ).
Moreover, recently he conducted a series of unique experiments with aquatic organisms-derived biogenic material (biogenic detritus). These experiments he conducted both in Russia and in the U.S.A. as a Fulbright Award recipient. These experiments were described by him in his another publication (Ostroumov 2011 [3] ).
Also, the author published a unique book on applying knowledge on chemico-biotic interactions to human health with very useful recommendations [4].
As a result of his experimental studies, the author formulated consistent and coherent conclusions.
The conclusions included identification of new environmental hazards, and new mechanisms for water self-purification, and new concepts of environmental chemistry.
The positive evaluation of publications of this author was given also by other experts, see [5-7]:
