So over over lunch I shared the story of a great man who fought unfairness and hatred, who encouraged people to follow their hearts and do the right thing, and who dreamed of a day when all creatures were treated with respect. The world was not yet ready for his message and the great man's life was taken violently.
That man, Steve continued, was Martin Luther King, Jr. and it is in honor of him that many places, including the post office, were closed today. His birthday is a national holiday. "Think of it not as a just a birthday party," Steve said, "but a day for people to think about his beliefs and great ideas."
"Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." Martin Luther King.
The WDA looked up from their jerky. Quinn toasted, "To a wise man who still today calls us to rise up to change the world. May his words always inspire a demand for justice. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!"
