Most of the places that I visit have a coolness about them. There is something that strikes a chord. I think it has to with just being naturally curious and enjoying change of pace.
One such place is Eastern Market in the Capital Hill Neighborhood of the District of Columbia. It is one of those quaint, cute, pretty urban neighborhoods where anyone with sense would love to live, even if you were not working at some "important" government job. There is energy and vitality present. People are walking about, they are talking to each other. The neighborhood is only blocks from the Capital so there is tourist activity. So in Eastern Market you will find vendors of every stripe, places to eat, places to drink , places to observe the passing parade. There is a inner market building where food rules. I admit to having had a Crabcake Sandwich which is required in that part of the country. I also had an apple that arrived in the produce area of the market from West Virginia, something I was not aware of is the fact that West Virginia in addition to having great coal, has great apples. A memorable apple in a lifetime of apple eating.
You will also find art and artist and a very nice feel to life. Go if you get the chance. Spend a little time and spend a little money. I bought a little wind whirl i gig from a man who fled Vietnam in 1975 along with his wife and family and came to the US , worked for the government as he was a high ranking Vietnamese official and now travels the flea market and craft show circuit and was completely unabashed in his love for America and Americans. I was touched.
