In the case of aquatic ecosystems [1- 5 ], self-reliance means self-purification of water.
The main features, principles, and processes of water self-purification were described and innovatively analyzed in the series of papers of a Fulbright Award winner at Moscow State University [2- 5].
The main principle of water self-purification:
It is one of the main functions of the entire ecosystems, of its biological communities, of practically all interacting populations of aquatic organisms, with multi-functional involvement of plants, animals, microorganisms and fungi that inhabit the aquatic habitat [ 2, 3 ].

What are the goals of wise and sustainable USE of water resources, and proper MANAGEMENT of the sources of water supply?
Answer is:Water sustainability, water safety.
A key part of water sustainability and water safety is WATER QUALITY.
It is vital to have good water quality in the surface aquatic ecosystems that serve as the sources of water supply. Moreover, it is necessary to have the good water quality for a LONG period of time.
The research and publications of the Fulbright Award winner at Moscow State University (e.g., [ 1, 2 ]) underlined importance and provided a multi-faceted innovative analysis of a KEY FACTOR to reach those goals. This factor is the PROPER FUNCTIONING OF AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS. The proper functioning means the functioning of the aquatic ecosystems (including the populations of aquatic organisms, the biota) toward water self-purification. The ecological mechanisms of water self-purification were given a fresh and modern analysis in the papers [ 1, 2 ]. The paper [ 1 ] described the mechanisms of water self- purification in both freshwater and marine ecosystems; the paper [ 2 ] described the mechanisms of water self-purification in marine and estuarine ecosystems.
These papers are a continuation of a series of other publications of the same author that were accepted well by international scientific community and were cited in various parts of the world: Europe, North America, India, China, and Australia [ 3 ]. Some of the papers of this series were often cited also in dissertations [4].
