- Edit2010.Full Text of Paper. The role of biodetritus in accumulation of elements in aquatic ecosystems. S.A.Ostroumov, G.M.Kolesov.p.369-373. http://ru.scribd.com/doc/114001532/http://ru.scribd.com/doc/114001532/This paper is the first publication that reported the concentrations of a number of rare earth elements in biodetritus. The rare earth elements are a key component of modern hi-technology products and they are a new component in the modern solid wastes and waste waters. This paper is an innovative and significant contribution to the database for modern environmental monitoring. ** Biodetritus that formed over a 7-month period in microcosms with Viviparus viviparus, Unio pictorum , and Ceratophyllum demersum contained a number of elements. This is the first study to determine concentrations of some elements in biodetritus. Neutron activation analysis showed that the elements’ concentrations decrease in the following order: Ca > Zn > Ba > Br > Ce > Se > Nd > La > U > Hf > Sb > Th > Sm > S > Cs > Au. The data obtained contribute to understanding of the polyfunctional role of aquatic organisms in aquatic ecosystems. [=Ostroumov, S.A., Solomonova E.A. Liquid detergent «Amway Dish Drops»: the impact on water macrophytes Elodea canadensis / / Toxicological Bulletin (=Toksikologicheskij vestnik), 2009, No. 3, p.48-49. Bibliogr. 5 refs. For the first time, the phytotoxicity of dish washing detergent to aquatic macrophytes was reported. The phytotoxic effects of liquid detergent for dishes «Amway Dish Drops» on the viability of aquatic macrophytes Elodea canadensis in a microcosm were studied. After three days of the damaging effects of the detergent, the effect on the plants was observed at a concentration of «Amway Dish Drops» 300 mg / l and above. The damaging effects manifested as the reduction of the turgor pressure, resulting in the apical parts of shoots bent down (there was no shoots with apical parts growing upwards). With more prolonged incubation (over 10 days), the damaging effects observed at a lower concentrations of «Amway Dish Drops»: starting with a concentration of 200 mg / l and above]. The aquatic macrophyte Ceratophyllum demersum immobilizes Au nanoparticles after their addition to water. Ostroumov SA, Kolesov GM. Doklady Biological Sciences (Dokl. Biol. Full text see online free: http://www.scribd.com/doc/45579375; Abstract: This is the first time it was shown that the nanoparticles of gold (Au) in substantial amount bind to the living biomass of the aquatic macrophyte, Ceratophyllum demersum. The concentrations of Au were measured in the samples of the phytomass using neutron activation analysis (NAA). As a result of the binding and/or immobilization of the nanoparticles, the amount of Au in the samples of the phytomass increased manifold (by a factor of 430) above the background level of gold in the plant tissues. The increase was by two orders of magnitude. The new data added some new information to the modern vision of the multifunctional role of the biota in the migration of elements in aquatic ecosystems. Also, the result added new information to the studies of interactions of Au with organisms that may contribute to new biotechnologies. Decreasing the measurable concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the water of the experimental systems containing Ceratophyllum demersum: the phytoremediation potential. Ostroumov S.A., Shestakova T.V. Doklady Biological Sciences (Dokl. Biol. Sci.) 2009 Sep-Oct; 428:444-447. PMID: 19994786 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]. Abstract: Discovery of the fact that aquatic plants C. demersum induced a removal of the heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb from water. Using the method of inversion voltamperometry, the concentrations of the heavy metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb were measured in the water of the experimental microcosms. Aquatic macrophytes Ceratophyllum demersum were incubated in some of the microcosms. The measured concentrations of all four metals decreased in the microcosms with macrophytes much faster than in the control microcosms without any macrophytes. Do detergents and synthetic surfactants pose any serious hazard to environment? the Answer given by the book: Yes, they do; 2. Do all types of detergents and washing mixtures pose that hazard – including, e.g. laundry detergents and shampoos? The Answer given by the book: Yes, they do; 3. How broad is the spectrum of negative biological effects produced by surfactants and detergents? The Answer given by the book: it is really broad and covers all the organisms that were used in author’s bioassays, without any exception: from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, from unicellular to multicellular organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals. 4. Do sublethal concentrations of surfactants and detergents pose a serious hazard to the biosphere? The Answer given by the book: Yes, they do. A good example is the author’s discovery of sublethal effects of surfactants on bivalve mollusks, which lead to a decrease in filtration rate, which in turn leads to a decrease in water self-purification, which pose a serious hazard of a decrease in water quality. 5. Is it possible to offer any new efficient methods or new modifications of the current methods for bioassay of chemicals? The Answer given by the book: Yes, it is not only possible but implemented. The book contains new methods/modifications of methods which increase the efficiency of bioassay with seedlings of plants and activity of filter-feeders (Chapter 2 in the book). 6. In which countries was the book cited and proved to be useful? Answer: Belgium, Denmark, Austria, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Slovakia, and others. See the text below. 7. In which countries did some libraries acquire this book? Answer: USA (Harvard University, MIT, Library of Congress, and others), Canada, UK (Oxford, Cambridge University, and others.), Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and others: to be corrected[http://www.scribd.com/doc/77617474] ** Examples of web-sites with information on the libraries that acquired the book: ** Libraries, universities worldwide acquired the books of Dr. S.A. The mankind is still far from establishing harmonious relations with it. However, permanently progressing destruction of natural complexes by the technogenic civilization necessitates some new revolutionary approaches to their preservation. That is why it is so important to study the relationships and interactions between living organisms. One of the most important roles in this “orchestra” is played by numerous invertebrates which filter the water and improve water quality. To what degree chemical pollutants modify their capacity to do this vital ecosystems service?
