Abstract: In order to treat / purity polluted water containing synthetic surfactant sulphonol (0.1 g/l), Pseudomonas mendocina cells immobilized in a bioreactor were used. The efficiency of the processes of water purification was monitored using both bioassay and chemical method. The following three biotests were used: the seedlings of plants Fagopyrum esculentum, Lepidium sativum and Sinapis alba. Growth of the seedlings of all the three species was strongly inhibited by the polluted water before its purification. The quality of polluted water was shown to be considerably improved after its treatment in the bioreactor according to the responses of the seedlings tested. Sulphonol inhibited the growth of algae Dunaliella asymmetrica 146 and elongation of Fagopyrum esculentum seedlings. In the experiments with sulphonol, algae were more sensitive to it than the seedlings. Both organisms can be used in further bioassay of pollutants.

Their sensitivity to that surfactant TDTMA was compared with the sensitivity of a test based on the use of terrestrial plants. The algal experiments were performed with aquatic and soil cultures. The experiments with terrestrial plants used the earlier-developed method with seedlings of Fagopyrum esculentumMoench. The experiments revealed the higher sensitivity of the test with the aquatic algal cultures. Purpose: To better characterize the possible effects of pollution of water by surface-active agents (surfactants, detergents). We studied the effects of the quaternary ammonium compound, cationic surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) on the test organisms. It is the first study in which the cationic surfactant TDTMA was tested in leeches Hirudo medicinalis. As a result, we identified new effects: changes in the behavior of the test organisms (leeches). It is the first study of the effects of this surfactant on the seedlings of the plants, buckweat Fagopyrum esculentum. As a result, we revealed some inhibition of seedling elongation. This paper establishes the following: relatively low concentrations of the pollutant (the cationic surfactant, quaternary ammonium compound) changed the behavior of the test organisms (medical leech Hirudo medicinalis). Leeches detached from the substrate, on which they previously sat. In the case of a river or stream, the detachment means that the flow of water will carry off the leeches. As a result, the ecosystem will lose these leeches. Thus, the final result is the same as if they were killed. It turns out that the sublethal effects on the organisms leads to the same final result as some large and highly toxic, lethal concentrations. Loss of leeches means a material breach of the food chain, i.e. a hazard of some harm to the structure of ecosystems. Keywords: Phytotoxicity, bioassay, Hydrobiology (hydrobiology). A review of some latest works on biological effect of different surfactants and surfactant-pollute aquatic environment on test-organisms is presented. Data on biotesting of aquatic environments containing commercial anionic, nonionic, cationic surfactants and their compositions are considered. A new approach to the problem of quantitative comparison of results from biotestings in different series of experiments is suggested. It is stated that pollution of aquatic environment with surfactants is ecologically more dangerous than it has been previously considered. It was shown that CHMA content in water with a concn of the active substance of 0.4-0.9 mg/ml inhibited plant growth. The effect was shown with prolonged incubation of germinating seeds for 43-67 h or more. Effects of aquatic pollution by a non-ionogenic surfactant on the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana. – Biology Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISSN 1062-3590, Nauka/Interperiodica Publishing). 1996. Vol. 23, No. 1, pp. 76-79, 3 tables. Bibliogr. 29 refs. [In collaboration: Fisher N., Maertz-Wente M., S.A.O.]. [Variants of the title of the journal: Biology Bulletin; Biology Bulletin- Russian Academy Of Sciences C/C Of Izvestiia- Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk Seriia Biologicheskaia]. The effects of the non-ionogenic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX), on the growth of cultured centric diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana were studied. In the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX the cell density in the culture was markedly lower than in the control culture. In the presence of 1 mg/l TX the decrease in cell density exceeded 50%. The decrease in the specific growth rate was about 10% in the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX and about 40% in the presence of 1 mg/l TX (over a period of seven days). The diatom sensitivity to TX was higher than that of some red and green algae and chrysophytes, as well as that of starfish spermatozoa and plant seedlings to TX or similar surfactants. These data reveal some more aspects of the ecological danger of aquatic pollution by non-ionogenic surfactants.

Seriya biologicheskaya/Proceedings of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Biological Series [IZV. RAN (BIOL.)]. no. 1, pp. 91-95. 1996. The paper reports a study on the growth of T. pseudonana culture at different concentrations of Triton X-100 (TX). At the TX of concentration 0.1 mg/l the culture density was reliably lower than in the control culture. At the concentration of 1 mg/l the density decreased by more than 50% on the 7th-8th day of the experiment. The decrease of the specific growth rate was about 10% at 0.1 mg/l and about 40% at 1 mg/l. The sensitivity of the diatom to TX was found to be higher than the sensitivity of some red, green and yellow-green algae as well as of starfish spermatazoa to TX and similar surfactants. Ecological hazard from sodium dodecylsulphate. — Toxicological Bulletin (in Russ., Toxicologicheskiy Vestnik = Toxicological Review, Moscow, ISSN 0869-7922). 1997. 3: 37. [In collaboration: Donkin, Peter, and S.A.O.]; [the effects of SDS on bivalves].
Inhibition by the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate, of the ability of mussels Mytilus edulis to filter and purify sea water. - Vestnik Mosk. Universiteta (Biol.). [=Bulletin of Moscow University. Ser. Biology]. 1997. No. 3, pp. 30-36. [In collaboration: S.A.O., Donkin P., Staff F.] Effects of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the filtering rate of the mussels were studied. Anionic surfactant SDS (1, 2 and 4 mg/L) inhibited water filtration by bivalves Mytilusedulis and removal from water of cells of algae Isochrysis galbana; the incubation time was 30-90 min (Tables 1 and 2). Aliquats of the algae Isochrysis galbana suspension were added to the beakers with mussels and sea water, and the filtering activity was measured by counting the algal cells at 30 min intervals during 1.5 h. After the first 30 min period, the cell density was 135% of that in the control at the initial SDS concentration 1 mg/L and 198% at 2 mg/L. A still greater difference in the algal cell concentration between the experiment and the control was observed when the SDS concentration was increased to 4 mg/L: it was 3 times higher after the first 30 min period, 6 times higher after 60 min and more than 14 times higher after 90 min. It is inferred that by inhibiting the filtering activity of the mussels SDS may reduce the natural self-purification capacity of aquatic ecosystems. The list of parameters of the ecosystem that may be changed under the effect of synthetic surfactants is given in Table 3. The experimental findings are discussed in the context of environmental protection with reference to literature data
