The Guardian and and Telegraph have named Lord Alistair McAlpine - as a person 'wrongly linked' to child abuse.
It is being suggested that the late Jimmie McAlpine, who is related to Lord Alistair McAlpine, may be the person referred to by witnesses as a child abuser.
Lord Alistair McAlpine was close to Margaret Thatcher and helped finance her campaigns.
Jimmy McAlpine lived near the Bryn Estyn children's home in Wrexham; he chaired the north of England builders Alfred McAlpine Ltd.
Steve Messham, a former resident of Bryn Estyn, said he had been taken to a Wrexham hotel and sexually abused by a top Tory more than a dozen times.
A local councillor, Keith Gregory, who was also a victim of abuse at Bryn Estyn, told the Guardian he did not believe Lord Alistair McAlpine was the person involved.
Keith Gregory said he thought a different member of the McAlpine family who lived locally may have been mistaken for Lord McAlpine.
Steven Messham told the Waterhouse inquiry his abuser was dead, whereas Lord McAlpine is alive.
When a Times reporter put Lord McAlpine's name to Steven Messham in 1996, Steven said his abuser was called Tom.
Local concillor Keith Gregory said boys from Bryn Estyn would be taken to the homes of two McAlpine family members in the area - Gerwyn Hall and Marchwiel Hall, both a few miles from Wrexham town centre.
Gerwyn Hall was occupied by Jimmie McAlpine, who died in 1991, six years before the Waterhouse inquiry began.
