Turkey not in the best of health.

A mortar shell 'fired from Syria' killed five people in Akçakale, in Turkey.

"It was by no means clear which side was responsible for the shelling, however, and some commentators in Turkey suggested that it could have been deliberately staged with the aim of provoking a Turkish intervention."

Moscow’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov has said that the Western-backed 'rebels' might deliberately provoke fighting on the border with the aim of drawing Turkey into the conflict."

Syria blames Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, allegedly an agent of the CIA, for the series of powerful blasts in Aleppo, on 3 October 2012, that killed 34 people.

The U.N. Security Council, with Russia's assent, "condemned in the strongest terms the shelling by the Syrian armed forces" of Akcakale.

If Turkey invades Syria, it might have a problem with Russia and Iran, its top two providers of natural gas.

In Turkey there is a lack of domestic support for an intervention in Syria.
