According to Liberation, the occupation of the roof of the mosque
(under construction) was an unauthorised protest which lasted for
several hours. The protest involved around 70 people from the far
right who came from all across France. 3 people were held in custody
after the protest was evicted. The local prosecutor has opened an
inquiry.
France's Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault condemned it as "a
provocation which revealed an unacceptable religious hatred". Boubaker
El Hadj Amor, president of the Muslim Community of Poitiers and local
imam, said that he was happy that the 8000-strong Muslim community in
the town had remained calm and had not risen to the bait."These
extremists were trying to provoke something, but they did not succeed"
he said.
