(en) France, Alternative Libertair #219 - The State: The analysis Bourdieu (fr)

This is a large volume (over 600 pages) that we propose Editions du Seuil to inaugurate a
series of courses unreleased publication of Pierre Bourdieu and, for this first, that no
less than three years over the issue state that we are compiled. ---- "Transverse to the
work of Pierre Bourdieu, the question of the state has been the subject of the book was to
unify the theory. Now this, to which he devoted three years of his teaching at the Coll?ge
de France, provides many ways the key to integrating all of his research: the "collective
fiction" the real effects is both the product, the challenge and the foundation of all the
struggles of interest. "[1] ---- First observation, the oral form of speech facilitates
access to the thinking of sociologist which has often been criticized for some of the
hermetic writings.

Second observation, and if he had retained a thing of this book is this: it is less a
(classical) sociology of Bourdieu State invites us an invitation to accompany in its
scientific approach - made up of doubts, questions, trails open - to think of the state
and especially the springs of his domination.

Internalization of domination

Beyond the Marxist tradition, with which Bourdieu wants out, accusing him of not the
problem of the existence of the state and abide by the functions it performs, "which is to
explain what made by the State, it is from his duties "is a genealogy forms of domination
specific to the state that offers us the sociologist (see interview Patrick Champagne in
this issue). In fact the only consciousness of alienation, ideological functions of the
state in the service of the ruling class is, the facts are there to remind us daily, not
enough to get rid of embedded patterns of domination. If the rule is so strongly it is
precisely because our socialization leads us to internalize so soft and deep, demonstrates
Bourdieu. Beyond the turmoil sporadic revolts sometimes, what essentially characterizes
our relationship to the state is our submission, obedience "natural" state order: no one
would question the measurement of time, standardized weights and measures, etc.. which are
much arbitrary social. Yet it is precisely here that lies the state, and consequently its
symbolic order, which we support everyone, and it is a process that is repeated in every
generation through the school system in particular and produces individuals are
homogenised standard-es, es-nationalized. The State, "leading producer of construction
instruments of social reality" is needed essentially a mostly symbolic violence that
Bourdieu is the cornerstone of the state's own domination.

The right hand of the state

But Bourdieu State is not just a block and its internal struggles within the object to map
two types of state: the state of the right hand (the one who punishes, punished and
monitors) and state of the left hand (the one who hears, who cares, protects).

This typology that sketch in the last course is also included in The Weight of the World
published in 1993. This duality, this rivalry is at the heart of the speech says Bourdieu,
between the advocates of more or less state, which is in fact between the proponents of a
police state or a welfare state. It is clear that the political left and right in their
actions favor the policies advocated by the proponents of the right hand of the state,
more prisons, cops, security controls (of the unemployed, the RSistses, etc..) than
supporters of the left hand - traditionally dominated es - more education, culture,
community structures and equally accessible to all.
