White Dog listened as I finished dressing to leave for the TEDxABQ day long seminar. I was telling her about how inspirational it is to watch and listen to speakers from every avenue of making a difference share their stories. The only thing that made me sad, I said, was that it was such a perfect Autumn day in our town. Temperatures in the low 70's, a bit moody with clouds that gathered then broke apart to reveal the sun, a crisp freshness to the air. It would be a shame to spend the day indoors in an auditorium.

Steve trailing the rest of the White Dog Army came in to check on my progress in time to hear White Dog's response. "Momma," she began. "I want to start by saying this is for you not me although I would love if you choose what I am about to propose."

"The LAST thing you need is to be inspired to change the world. You are doing it everyday, constantly thinking about a better world, a kinder world, a world without cancer. You should be GIVING those lectures not just attending them...don't interrupt...What you need is selfish time. Time stolen from the bazillions of things you have on your lists to step back and refresh and recharge. Run away for a day, shirk responsibility, just be. This is an incredible day don't waste it inside hearing what your heart already knows. Go up into the mountains...take us or not but I hope you do...and just walk in the trees, listen to the wind, stretch your eyes to the horizon, feel the cold water of the stream, and watch for hawks circling. Draw you inspiration there."

"But we already have tickets." "Consider it a contribution to a wonderful cause." "But..." WD silenced me with a lick and I turned to look at Steve. "She makes a damn good point."
