Innovation / Discovery:
A new reason for and factor contributing to the symptom of eutrophication, excessive abundance of phytoplankton, was discovered in this paper.
This factor was discovered to be a decrease in activity of filter-feeders in the aquatic ecosystem. The author discovered that it is surfactants and detergent that decrease the filtering activity of filter-feeders exemplified by bivalve mollusks.
Thus in the paper, a new link was discovered between chemical pollution with toxic substances (exemplified by surfactants and detergents) and eutrophication.
A new solution was suggested to solve the problem of eutrophication. This solution is a decrease in chemical pollution of water with detergent mixtures which have surfactants as part of their chemical composition.
Why it is useful:
As a result of his new experiments, the author discovered a previously neglected and important factor that contributes to eutrophication. This factor is connected with neither P, nor N. This factor is surfactants which inhibit filter-feeders. As a result, a new methodology and measures to prevent and control eutrophication are proposed.

to ensure water sustainability, and water quality.
