A while ago, a new modernized definition of fundamental ecological terminology was published. It was a pure academic research. The topic was an absolutely pure science, without any practical connection with applied issues. Who cares on the subtleties of how professors define ecosystem? Ecosystem is an abstract word.

It was a surprise to many people that this work was cited in a paper on urgent practical issues. What is more practical and urgent than the issues of security and counterterrorism?
