Do detergents and synthetic surfactants pose any serious hazard to environment? the Answer given by the book: Yes, they do; 2. Do all types of detergents and washing mixtures pose that hazard – including, e.g. laundry detergents and shampoos? The Answer given by the book: Yes, they do; 3. How broad is the spectrum of negative biological effects produced by surfactants and detergents? The Answer given by the book: it is really broad and covers all the organisms that were used in author’s bioassays, without any exception: from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, from unicellular to multicellular organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals. 4. Do sublethal concentrations of surfactants and detergents pose a serious hazard to the biosphere? The Answer given by the book: Yes, they do. A good example is the author’s discovery of sublethal effects of surfactants on bivalve mollusks, which lead to a decrease in filtration rate, which in turn leads to a decrease in water self-purification, which pose a serious hazard of a decrease in water quality. 5. Is it possible to offer any new efficient methods or new modifications of the current methods for bioassay of chemicals? The Answer given by the book: Yes, it is not only possible but implemented. The book contains new methods/modifications of methods which increase the efficiency of bioassay with seedlings of plants and activity of filter-feeders (Chapter 2 in the book). 6. In which countries was the book cited and proved to be useful? Answer: Belgium, Denmark, Austria, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Slovakia, and others. See the text below. 7. In which countries did some libraries acquire this book? Answer: USA (Harvard University, MIT, Library of Congress, and others), Canada, UK (Oxford, Cambridge University, and others.), Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and others: to be corrected[http://www.scribd.com/doc/77617474] ** Examples of web-sites with information on the libraries that acquired the book: ** Libraries, universities worldwide acquired the books of Dr. S.A. The mankind is still far from establishing harmonious relations with it. However, permanently progressing destruction of natural complexes by the technogenic civilization necessitates some new revolutionary approaches to their preservation. That is why it is so important to study the relationships and interactions between living organisms. One of the most important roles in this “orchestra” is played by numerous invertebrates which filter the water and improve water quality. To what degree chemical pollutants modify their capacity to do this vital ecosystems service? The goal of this review articles is to summarize some evidence of a variety of toxic effects produced by manufactured nanoparticles, including both the data from literature and the new data of the authors (e.g., [42]). The toxicity of nanomaterials was shown both to prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. As for eukaryotic organisms, toxicity was found in bioassays with both animal and plant test systems. In further studies, it is necessary to continue the studies of various aspects of toxicity of nanoparticles, and to extend the range of organisms and test systems that are being used for assessing the biological effects of nanomaterials. The methods that were previously developed to study phytotoxicity of chemicals [15-28, 48] will be useful to generate new data on toxicology of nanomaterials.

The role of biodetritus in accumulation of elements in aquatic ecosystems. - CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS OF ECOLOGY, 2010, 3 (4): 369-373. http://www.scribd.com/doc/104719698This paper is the first publication that reported the concentrations of a number of rare earth elements in biodetritus. The rare earth elements are a key component of modern hi-technology products and they are a new component in the modern solid wastes and waste waters. This paper is an innovative and significant contribution to the database for modern environmental monitoring. ** Biodetritus that formed over a 7-month period in microcosms with Viviparus viviparus, Unio pictorum , and Ceratophyllum demersum contained a number of elements. This is the first study to determine concentrations of some elements in biodetritus. Neutron activation analysis showed that the elements’ concentrations decrease in the following order: Ca > Zn > Ba > Br > Ce > Se > Nd > La > U > Hf > Sb > Th > Sm > S > Cs > Au.

ISSN 1995-4255 (Print) 1995-4263 (Online)] [Earlier, the author published two books and some papers, in which he described conceptual foundations of new scientific disciplines — biochemical ecology and biochemical hydrobiology. These trends in research include studies of the role of chemical substances in interorganismal interactions, in communication and regulation of supraorganismal systems. Another part of biochemical ecology concerns studies of the destiny and transformation of external chemical substances when they interact with the organisms. Both natural and man-made compounds are interesting for biochemical ecology. The basic concepts of biochemical ecology include ecological chemomediators and ecological chemoregulators that have already been included in the body of modern conceptions and are used in modern ecological literature. Application of biochemical ecology to aquatic ecosystems creates the basis for development of biochemical hydrobiology. A. Ostroumov (Ecotoxicology of Detergents,New Methods,Bioassay,Hazard Assessment) Biological Effects of Surfactants. S.A. Ostroumov | CRC Press | December, 2005 | 304 pages | English; Understanding the role of aquatic biota and the impact of pollution and chemical substances that enter aquatic ecosystems is crucial to the assessment, prevention, and remediation of damaged environments. Biological Effects of Surfactants synthesizes the most important findings from hundreds of articles and the author's current experiments on the biological effects of synthetic surfactants and detergents on individual organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. This book offers a new perspective of the hazards of pollution. The book draws upon concepts in hydrobiology, biogeochemical cycling, and the assimilative capacity of water. The book presents the results of the author's experiments that discovered and examined new effects of anionic, non-ionic, and cationic surfactants as well as detergent mixtures on a wide range of organisms. The list of the organisms that were studied included bacteria, cyanobacteria, flagellates, algae, higher plants, and invertebrates. The author, a distinguished member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, establishes new quantitative characteristics of the effects and presents study results reflecting newly discovered phenomena. While proposing and substantiating new priorities and approaches for testing, assessing, and characterizing the biological activities and hazards of substances, he illustrates how the data obtained can be used to develop effective environmental remediation and protection measures to improve water quality. Biological Effects of Surfactants lays an excellent foundation for scientists to explore how hazardous wastes are absorbed in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, determine what is required for remediation and restoring water quality, and design the best approach to counteract the toxic effects of manmade surfactants using biological methods, including phytoremediation. http://www.ebookee.net/Biological-Effects-of-Surfactants-S-A-Ostroumov_1556057.html Ecotoxicology, Detergents, New, Methods, Bioassay, Hazard, Assessment, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, anionic, non-ionic, cationic, surfactants, detergent, mixtures, bacteria, cyanobacteria, flagellates, algae, higher plants, invertebrates,
