on the Marine Diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana

Abstract—The effects of the non-ionogenic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX), on the growth of cultured centric diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana were studied. In the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX the cell density in the culture was markedly lower than in the control culture. In the presence of 1 mg/l TX the decrease in cell density exceeded 50%. The decrease in the specific growth rate was about 10% in the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX and about 40% in the presence of 1 mg/l TX (over a period of seven days). The diatom sensitivity to TX was higher than that of some red and green algae and chrysophytes, as well as that of starfish spermatozoa and plant seedlings
to TX or similar surfactants. These data reveal some more aspects of the ecological danger of aquatic pollution by non-ionogenic surfactants.

Publication 1.
Innovative conceptualization of ecosystem’s biomachinery (a new scientific term that was proposed by the author; it means ecological mechanisms that include biological communities and biodiversity) which improves WATER QUALITY. The innovative experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental elements of the new qualitative theory of biocontrol of water quality in a systematized form. The theory covers WATER SELF-PURIFICATION in freshwater and marine ecosystems.

This paper is the first publication that reported the concentrations of a number of rare earth elements in biodetritus formed in WATER ECOSYSTEMS.

What is new: a polymeric chemical inhibited growth rate of plant seedlings. The first publication to report a new type of a potential AQUATIC POLLUTANT.
The first publication to report phytotoxicity of a synthetic polymeric surfactant. An innovative bioassay with the higher plant Fagopyrum esculentum (buckwheat) was carried out. A negative reaction of buckwheat seedlings to pollution of the aqueous medium with a polymeric surfactant was discovered.
Publication 21.
New facts on a chemical product that represents important class of AQUATIC POLLUTANTS. The first paper to report new phytotoxic effects of a liquid detergent. Before this paper, no phytotoxic effects of liquid detergents were known. New phytotoxic effects of the liquid detergent "Vilva" on the seedlings of the higher plants, buckweat Fagopyrum esculentum and rice Oryza sativa, were discovered.

This publication reported the author's unique experience in using non-traditional non-animal methods to bioassay the toxicity of chemicals which pollute AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT. His experiments discovered new facts on toxicity of synthetic surfactants and detergents to a number of species, e.g. to some higher plant species and algae.

This paper is the first publication that reported the concentrations of a number of rare earth elements in biodetritus. The rare earth elements are a key component of modern hi-technology products and they are a new component in the modern solid wastes and waste waters. This paper is an innovative and significant contribution to the database for modern environmental monitoring.

Biodetritus that formed over a 7-month period in microcosms with Viviparus viviparus, Unio pictorum , and Ceratophyllum demersum contained a number of elements. This is the first study to determine concentrations of some elements in biodetritus. Neutron activation analysis showed that the elements concentrations decrease in the following order: Ca > Zn > Ba > Br > Ce > Se > Nd > La > U > Hf > Sb > Th > Sm > S > Cs > Au. The data obtained contribute to understanding of the multifunctional (polyfunctional) role of aquatic organisms in aquatic ecosystems.

A fundamentally new approach and methodology to study top-down control in ecosystems: the first introduction of what the author calls ‘inhibitory analysis’. The paper presented a new insight in understanding that a decrease in activity of filter-feeders is part of the causes and mechanisms of eutrophication and algal blooms. The paper shows how to identify and measure this new factor which stimulates those negative phenomena.

The first publication in which a concise outline was made of the author’s innovative theory of water self-purification. A short list of physical, chemical, and biological processes of water self-purification is given. One of the conclusions is: ‘living organisms are the core component of the multitude of processes of the ecological machinery working towards improving water quality’. Innovative and multifaceted conceptualization of how almost all aquatic organisms (biological community) work together toward making water clear and clean. In the title of the paper, the word ‘polyfunctional’ means the same as the word ‘multi-functional’.

It is the first paper in which it was clearly proved that the synthetic chemical (exemplified by the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS), when it pollutes water, produces a dangerous effect on both marine mussels ( Mytilus edulis ) and phytoplankton. SDS decreases water filtration rate by the mussels, and the normal control of abundance of phytoplankton by the marine mussels, the control which is associated with the filtration of water.

This is a first publication to report a hazardous effect of a synthetic non-ionic surfactant (exemplified by Triton X-100) on diatom algae (exemplified by a marine species, Thalassiosira pseudonana). In the paper, it was shown that this chemical inhibited the reproduction rate and abundance of the cells of this species of marine phytoplankton. Non-ionic surfactants are the key components of many detergents and other chemical mixture products that are being produced in big quantities and used on large scale.

Abstract—The effects of the non-ionogenic surfactant, Triton X-100 (TX), on the growth of cultured centric diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana were studied. In the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX the cell density in the culture was markedly lower than in the control culture. In the presence of 1 mg/l TX the decrease in cell density exceeded 50%. The decrease in the specific growth rate was about 10% in the presence of 0.1 mg/l TX and about 40% in the presence of 1 mg/l TX (over a period of seven days). The diatom sensitivity to TX was higher than that of some red and green algae and chrysophytes, as well as that of starfish spermatozoa and plant seedlings
to TX or similar surfactants. These data reveal some more aspects of the ecological danger of aquatic pollution by non-ionogenic surfactants.

This is a first publication to report both inhibitory and stimulation effects of a synthetic surfactant on two unique strains of the ocean species of cyanobacteria Synechococcus from the collection of WHOI. These data demonstrated a new hazard of an imbalance of species composition of marine phytoplankton under the effect of pollution by synthetic chemical pollutants.
The non-ionogenic synthetic surfactant Triton X-100 acted differently on two strains of cyanobacteria Synechococcus WH 7805 and Synechococcus WH 8103. Thus, 5 mg/liter of the surfactant inhibited the growth of the culture of strain 7805 and favored the growth of the culture of strain 8103. A lower concentration (0.5 mg/liter) stimulated the growth of both strains. The surfactant Triton X-100 produced no effect on the motility of strain 8103 cells.

What is new, one-line summary: Polymeric chemical inhibited growth rate of plant seedlings.
The first publication to report phytotoxicity of a synthetic polymeric surfactant. An innovative bioassay with the higher plant Fagopyrum esculentum (buckwheat) was carried out. A negative reaction of buckwheat (cv. Shatilov-5) seedlings to pollution of the aqueous medium with a polymeric surfactant was discovered. The surfactant studied was a copolymer of hexene and maleic aldehyde (CHMA). It was shown that CHMA content in water with a concentration of the active substance of 0.4-0.9 mg/ml inhibited plant growth. The effect was shown with prolonged incubation of germinating seeds for 43-67 h or more. These data should be taken into account in analysis of the possible ecological consequences of irrigating lands with waste waters and polluted waters.

The first paper to report new phytotoxic effects of a liquid detergent. Before this paper, no phytotoxic effects of liquid detergents were known. New phytotoxic effects of the liquid detergent "Vilva" on the seedlings of the higher plants, buckweat Fagopyrum esculentum and rice Oryza sativa, were discovered. At a concentration of "Vilva" 0.25 ml / L, the growth of the seedlings of F. esculentum stopped, and the elongation rate of the seedlings of O. sativa was inhibited by 22-75%.

Description: Based on the development of root hairs in seedlings of Fagophyrum esculentum, Sinapis alba, and Triticum aestivum, and surfactant Triton X-100 was bioassayed. Triton X-100 induced a loss of adherence to the substrate of F. esculentum and S. alba seedlings. It inhibited the development of root hairs in these species and also in T. aestivum. The new approach to bioassay of xenobiotics and pollutants is discussed.

This is a first publication to report a unique bioassay of synthetic surfactants using soil algae. Also, this is a first publication to report a juxtaposition of results of the three methods of assessment of toxicity of a chemical: the methods that use (1) plant seedlings; (2) aquatic algae cultures; (3) soil algal cultures.
Experiments investigating the effects of the cationic surface active compound tetradecyl trimethylammonium bromide (TDTMA) on a number of aquatic and soil algal cultures, and the seedlings of the higher plant Fagopyrum esculentum are described, and the results presented. It is concluded that future studies on the effects of pollutants on algae should involve the use of several test systems (both aquatic and soil algal cultures).

A more detailed abstract: The effects of environmental pollution with a cationic surface-active substance (surfactant tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide TDTMA) on certain cyanobacteria and algae were studied. The effects on cyanobacteria Nostoc muscorum Ag, strain 33 isolated from the soil in the Kirov Oblast (Region); and on green algae Bracteacoccus minor (Chodat) Petrova, strain 200 and strain 219 (the strain 219 was isolated from the volcanic ash collected next to Tyatya Volcano, the island of Kunashir) were investigated. Their sensitivity to the surfactant TDTMA was compared with the sensitivity of terrestrial plants. The algal experiments were performed with aquatic and soil cultures. The experiments with terrestrial plants used the earlier-developed method with the seedlings of Fagopyrum esculentum Moench. The experiments revealed a higher sensitivity of the test with the aquatic algal cultures.
