Earlist hydraulic engineering traced in E. China

A historical site comprising of a system of dams has recently been found in Liangzhu Town in Zhejiang Province. This has been identified as the earliest example of hydraulic engineering in China, and extends the history of China’s water conservancy back to more than 4,800 years ago. 


The site includes a total of ten dams made of earth in varying lengths. And the longest measures 6.5 kilometers. This system can withstand precipitation of 960 millimetres. 

Liangzhu is an important archaeological and historic site, showcasing culture in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River in the Neolithic Period.
