INTRODUCTION. The concept of ecosystem health became popular now. What is ecosystem health in case of aquatic ecosystems (reservoirs, rivers, lakes, seas, estuaries)? To answer this question, there are a lot of factors to be taken into consideration. Previously, one of them was ignored. However, this factor became more visible after the works of the Fulbright Award winner, Dr. S.A. Ostroumov (M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University). 2. DISCOVERY. This factor is the ability of a healthy ecosystem to improve and maintain water quality, in other words, to perform self-purification of water. The main features of water self-purification were discovered, described and put into a system by Dr. S. Ostroumov in his publications of 1998 – 2010 [1-9]. 3. ADDITIONAL USEFUL BIBLIOGRAPHY. In addition to above-mentioned English papers, this author published some articles in Russian [10-15]. Moreover, he covered the various aspects of self-purification in his books of 2004 -2008 [16-18]. Additional discussion of his publications is given at the sites [19-21]. 4. CONCLUSION. These publications developed a new well-structured theory of water self-purification. In conclusion, the analysis of current literature demonstrated that the ecosystem health of aquatic - freshwater, estuarine, marine - ecosystems includes the ability of the biological community to purify water (to perform water self-purification). The modern theory of water self-purification was developed by Fulbright Award winner Dr. S. A. Ostroumov in his papers and books. 5. This article was published in proceedings of Russian Academy of Science as one of the papers of the series of publications that formed a new theory of how an aquatic ecosystem functions. This paper is the first that presented a concise and multi-aspect formulation of this theory. More recent publications by the same author and many scientists in all parts of the world confirmed this theory. According to this theory, almost all living organisms in aquatic ecosystem function together as an analog of a large scale bioreactor or as an analog of hi-tech machinery toward improving water quality. The author of this theory, a scientist of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia), demonstrated that among the aquatic organisms are those who do the functions of filters, pumps, and mills, which remove pollutants and contaminants from water. One of the key papers of this series is: On the Biotic Self-purification of Aquatic Ecosystems: Elements of the Theory. [authored: S. A. Ostroumov, Moscow State University] This paper presents a new conceptualization of how almost all species of biodiversity of the aquatic organisms functions together toward up-grading water quality. A new theory of water self-purification by aquatic (freshwater, marine) ecosystems was presented in this paper. Among the issues that were covered, and the key parts of the theory: (1) Conceptualization and analysis in detail of how the biotic community functions as a mechanism of water self-purification processes. (2) The theory presents an innovative analysis of various activities of a broad range of organisms including the filtration of water by filter-feeders, which has a serious conditioning effect on aquatic ecosystems. (3) The self-purification mechanism is not a kind of rigid, firmly fixed machinery. This mechanism is vulnerable to anthropogenic stress. E.g., water pollution with sublethal concentrations of chemical pollutants can inhibit activity of organisms that are filter-feeders; as a result, the chemical pollutants slow down biological filtration in ecosystems, thereby giving rise to additional aspects of ecological hazards. (4) The theory accommodates the new experimental data of the author, including new experimental evidence of the vulnerability of the activity of filter-feeders to some chemicals/xenobiotics/pollutants exemplified by synthetic surfactants of various classes, and detergents. Работа (С.А.Остроумов и соавторы, 1986 – по настоящее время) включала в себя изучение воздействий загрязняющих веществ на различные виды гидробионтов, а также иных тест- организмов.Можно выделить следующие части этой работы. 1. Изучение воздействия химических веществ на высшие растения, в том числе водные. 2. Изучение воздействия химических веществ на пресноводных и морских моллюсков. 3. Изучение воздействия химических веществ на другие объекты (в том числе на бактерии, одноклеточные водоросли, водных беспозвоночных – ракообразных и аннелид). По первой части – работа начиналась с изучения воздействия синтетических поверхностно-активных веществ (ПАВ) и детергентов на высшие растения. В последние годы исследования включали в себя изучение действия ПАВ, детергентов и некоторых других поллютантов (тяжелых металлов) на высшие водные растения. Интерес к ПАВ был в значительной мере обусловлен тем, что ПАВ – представители мембранотропных ксенобиотиков. Действие мембранотропных веществ на организмы заслуживают внимания в силу большой важности биомембран для жизнедеятельности клеток и организмов ([51], а также [33, 66]).Некоторые результаты изучения воздействия находящихся в водной среде загрязняющих веществ на растения приведены ниже в таблице. Она основана на таблице 2 в работе (С.А.Остроумов, 2009 www.scribd.com/doc/74244596/). Сделаны дополнения, касающихся последних работ. Отметим, что для оценки качества водной среды и тем самым для гидробиологии важны работы не только на водных растениях, но и на наземных. В неоднократно рекомендованные специалистами списки методов оценки качества вод входят и методы биотестирования на проростках наземных растений. Эти методы доказали свою ценность и сохраняют свою значимость и поныне, поскольку относительно недороги, удобны в использовании и могут эффективно применяться в условиях современного дефицита средств на научные исследования.
