There is an old movie with the title Follow Me Boys, Fred Mc Murray was the lead actor, it was about Boy Scouts or something resembling Boy Scouts. Yesterday , early in the morning, after riding my bicycle over to church, I went for a little bit of an extended ride. In the parking lot of one of the community fixtures I saw a bunch of boys. Perhaps 20 or more, dressed in Boy Scout uniforms along with some adult leaders. It was clear that they were off on the annual adventure that is Boy Scout Camp.
My brothers and I participated when we were kids. We enjoyed it immensely, the lakes, the snakes, the rocks the bugs, the heat, the smell of waxed and oiled canvass, the wooden bunks in lean tos, the smoke from campfires,
So it was nice to see a large compliment of boys going off to camp. It is a rarity to see that many together in one place. In the scheme of things today, you see Scout Troops of 6 to 10 boys, rarely more , often much less. Our community has continued to keep its program popular.
They have done so by having non political views, keeping the program in mind and pushing for outdoor activity for boys. They have also had solid citizens as leaders , leaders who know the score, no shennanigans and men who take the idea of youth protection very seriously.
Have fun guys. 45 years later I still recall it fondly.
