I hate dollar stores with a passion reserved for little else. I hate the crap they sell. I hate the smell of Chinese cardboard. I start to hate the shoppers too, that is not a good thing in my Judeo /Christian mindset. But how can you possibly like people who have more ink on their bodies than the
Sunday New York Times has within its paper. Not to mention their penchant for showing it by wearing tube tops and sleaveless T shirts.
I can not usually be dragged into one. I was however pulled kicking and screaming into one not too long ago, by my wife who was searching and finding bargains in the fake flower aisle. While she was occupied in sorting and matching yellows and oranges, I was allowed to roam. She was able to convince me to come inside by the fact that it was 98 degrees outside and she took the keys to the car. My choices were thus limited to roasting outside or endure the airconditioned stench and deritus inside. I chose in over out, and I endured walking aisles with more junk on the floors than on the shelves, open packages of all manner of stuff, a complete aisle of 1 dollar cell phone chargers that promise to work through one complete charge cycle and thereafter causing the wiring to overheat and the house burn down.
While roaming I cam to an aisle that had books, loads of books. Must have been the offload of Border's Books and Music excess stock. I kind of knew that because t TThey were upscale books. I picked one up. It was titled :LIFE IS LIKE A SAILBOAT , The Author is John Grogan, who hit a homerun with Marley and Me , his best selling tale of a misbehaving family dog.
Life is Like a Sailboat set me back the princely sum of $1.00, it was a dollar store afterall. The back jacket has a listed US Price of $18.95 /$22.00 Canada. So if you ever come across a copy buy it, even if it cost more than a buck.www.lifeisasailboat.com
It is such an enjoyable read that I have altered my view on dollar stores. I will now allow myself to freely enter , when it is July, when it is 100 degrees and when I have no access to automotive A/C.
Not unreasonable.
