Abbey dig yields 'amazing' finds

Part of a medieval floor and some ancient coins are among the ‘amazing’ finds that have already been uncovered at this year’s archaeological dig at Polesworth Abbey.

Dig the Abbey 2012 started last week and follows a successful six-week dig last year. Father Philip Wells, who heads the project, said: “Despite the rain last week, some amazing finds were uncovered. As well as various coins – one from the 1200s – an area of medieval floor was discovered causing excitement for all involved.” 

Community archaeologist Tim Upson-Smith, who uncovered the first of the floor tiles, said: “This is the sort of moment that we wait years for!” 

The decorated tiles are believed to be in their original location in the refectory of the abbey and the plan is to incorporate these and any other features within the new refectory planned for Polesworth Abbey's visitors.

Dig the Abbey volunteers are supported by a team of professional archaeologists from Northampton and the project has received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £65,600 as well as support from the Arts Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council. 

Work is taking place Monday to Friday till mid-September, and also on some Saturdays. There are jobs for people of all ages as well as a poetry interpretation with a poet-in-residence for each week.
