Is it a good work if it is fun

Several of my Geocaching friends and I maintain a trail in the High Mountain Reservation in Wayne Township , NJ.  High Mountain was the point of land that most immigrants coming by ship into Ellis Island saw first  from some 20 miles out in the Atlantic.  When someone would yell, Land, it was High Mountain that they saw.  It is not a real mountain in the sense that some mountains go, but it is a little climb to the top.

So as with many things these days it was in need of attention, so we put our boots where our mouths are and said we would maintain 5 miles of trail.  We have adhered to our end and the trail is clean, clear and passable, free of litter with nice blazes to lead the hiker through.

When we meet to do this little bit of environmental nod work, we chat, joke, hike and chat some more.  There is ebb and flow, but for several hours we enjoy each others company.  Does that add to or diminish the work, or is it really the goal.

Enjoyment of the company of friends at this point in our lives is really the good work.  Here is to friendship.  Cherish it, cultivate it, pass it on.
