Weekend Warrior

Every year for the last 5 years I have ridden in the Five Borough Bike Tour in NYC. It is a crazy day of 40+ miles over car free streets and highways of NYC. Up Broadway, past the news rooms, the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, into Central Park, up to Harlem, with the well dressed Church Ladies on the way to services escorted by well dressed handsome men, a few twist and turns into The gritty, The Bronx, back to Manhattan and onto Suburban Queens, down to Brooklyn with neighborhoods of disparity, finally over the grand bridge, with a ferry ride home past the Statue of Liberty and staring at Manhattan from the lower end. It is magical , in that it is fun, it works and I loved it. But this year they had a lottery for registrants to get a number and I did not. But what I did do was I signed up to volunteer to work for the promoter to help get it together. I worked Saturday, the day before the ride, from 8:30 or so to 3:30 or so. A little before our official shift began and ended. I was up at 6 and drove over to NYC, joined with other volunteers and we worked non stop. I met people from Argentina, California, Iceland, Europe and many other locales who had come to New York to make the ride. I had as much fun as if I were riding, although I worked harder. So for those who would hesitate to volunteer for something, I say go for it as it might be the most enjoyable thing you do this year. Side note, my 25 year old nephew completed his first marathon over the weekend. Rock on Ryan.
