TUSCON--Vancouver native Kara Patterson (left/file photo by Mike Scott) won the women's javelin competition as day 1 of the Tuscon Elite throwers and jumpers meet got underway Thursday night at Drachman Stadium on the campus of the University of Arizona.

Patterson threw 195-9 (59.66m) in the first round for the victory, and was never seriously challenged.
