Actually , the practice is not what to give up, but what to do. So for the next 40 days I will try and do something nice for someone. I have day one covered, as I did something for someone else. I will tally the days I was able to pull it together and report it at the end of the Lenten season.
I think it would be a great idea if people adopted the same type of thing, so instead of giving up chocolate or some other thing, they went out to consciously with forethought into the world with the idea of doing something nice for someone else. Doesn't have to be a big thing and it can be for anyone. Maybe my idea would spread and husbands would do some laundry or dishes, kids would let mom sleep a little longer on the weekend and not be demanding breakfast.
The only problem I foresee is if my family notices, they might think I am up to something.
