Palmyra is surrounded on all sides: the Arab citadel, the olive and palm groves, the desert, the city itself." Troops are camped in the citadel overlooking the Roman ruins. "Machinegun fire targets any movement among the ruins," the undisclosed source said during a telephone interview. Other sources claim hundreds have fled the city already. . .
