Likewise, when two cultures meet, the result of the union of two individuals/ two groups/ two communities/ two countries depends more on the nature of the relationship between them than on what those cultures are. They could be two extremes, like 1 and 0, but they could still make 10 if they get the relationship part right.
When a country intervenes in another not with the plan to stand besides them as equals, despite them being 1 and 0, but with the plan to change them, then the result can only be 1 or 0, it can never be 10. When one culture, one country or one nation wants to "change" the other culture, country or nation, the result can either be the destruction of one, or of both.
