Have to be careful with this one, might get myself into trouble, but here goes. There is all this talk of sex abuse scandal at Penn State, coming on the heals of the Roman Catholic Church sex abuse scandal and I see a common thread.
It is the women, or rather the lack of women. Both of these situations arise in bastions of male dominated and male hierarchal organizations. Both of these situations lack the balance of thought that women would have lent to the decisions as to how they should have been handled.
If you were the President of Penn State and you were confronted with this situation , your best choice would have been to go to a high ranking (if you could identify and find one) woman and ask---What should we do ? She probably would have told you up front, cut the guy loose, which was done in 1999, but she probably would have said, cut him really loose, no more emeritus, no more access, no more bringing kids on campus and for goodness sake get the charity he worked for to acknowledge the reasons for this. Then the woman would have sat down and explained to the Athletic Department that they are still part of the greater university program and they need to comply with expectations. If a balanced thought from a woman was mixed in, there would be no cover ups or coddling for Mr. Sandusky, he would have been gone a long time ago.
Same thing with the Church, the Bishops would have been told up front and without equivocation that molesters must go.
Men in groups tend to think of the organization, balance that with women who tend to think of the peopled damaged and affected. Male think needs to be balanced by female think in order to reach a balanced decision. Many corporations began to recognize this a long time ago, too bad football programs and churches are slow to pick up on it.
