White Dog slipped down off her perch when she heard my calm, stoic, "oh well, it was a good try" into the phone. She signalled the rest of the White Dog Army to follow her as she came over and sat on my lap.

The others looked at her in puzzlement and she gently quoted,
"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville - mighty Casey has struck out."

The pups pushed against me in instant understanding and consolation. I smiled at their willingness to erase my pain and shrugged. "Dearest Ones, what is, is. We have lots of work to catch up."

The hard drive is truly dead and the files are irretrievable. Josh was unable to work his magic. Steve had tried his best. Perhaps with a couple of weeks at a specialty lab in CA (starting at $900) some parts might be resurrected but it would be too late and too costly.

On the bright side Josh did conjure up a new hard drive that is 160% larger than my old one for a very sympathetic price.

Now the rebuilding begins...
