A study on the use plan of the archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, that addresses the carrying capacity of the sanctuary, will be presented on Friday before local and foreign experts attending the 6th International Tourism Meeting held in Cusco.
The head of the Regional directorate of trade and tourism (Dircetur) Victor Perez noted that various experts such as Ana Garcia, from the World Tourism Organization (WTO); Don Hawkins, from George Washington University; and Victor Gorga, a Spanish tourism consultant, will take part in this event.
Other important experts include Mexican environmental architect Hector Ceballos-Lascurain as well as tourism consultants from Ecuador and Peru, David Parra and Roberto Portugal, respectively.
Perez said that the study, which will be presented today, has been prepared by Dircetur with the support of national, Latin American and European experts.
The said study will address the carrying capacity of Machu Picchu's historical sanctuary (2,500 people per day, at present), Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity and one of the seven new wonders of the world.
“It has very interesting proposals. It’s not easy as it sounds saying how many go in and how many go out. It’s a technical proposal that safeguards the conservation and rational use of Machu Picchu.”
