Amman - Hundreds of Jordanians demonstrated near the Israeli embassy after performing Ramadan prayers Saturday night at a mosque in the vicinity, demanding the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador.
Police cordoned off the area in the Rabia neighbourhood and blocked protesters from reaching the Israeli diplomatic mission.
The demonstrators were protesting Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and the killing of three Egyptian soldiers near the border with Israel in the Sinai peninsula.
At least 15 Palestinians were killed and 45 wounded, according to Palestinian sources, in Israeli airstrikes over the last two days in Gaza.
The demonstrators raised Jordanian, Egyptian and Palestinian flags and shouted slogans for the closure of the Israeli embassy and the abrogation of Jordan's 1994 peace treaty with Israel. They burnt an Israeli flag.
