March 30, 1946, an attack on a police station marks the beginning of a civil war between
forces from the anti-Nazi resistance, grouped around the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and
government troops controlled by the right (a block of fascists, royalists and bourgeois),
allied with Britain and the United States. More than three years later, at dawn on August
30, 1949, falls Hill Kamenik who was the last bastion of the Democratic Army of Greece
(DAG), military training ???. If the loss is definitely spend the country into the Western
bloc, this struggle remains a fundamental reference for the current Greek left. ---- On 28
October 1940 the Greek monarchy, under the influence of his English ally, rejects the
ultimatum of fascist Italy and took part in the war. During this period, the
"dictatorship" of Prime Minister Metaxas, several Communist Party members mainly and small
Trotskyist groups, are imprisoned or exiled. Among them is the general secretary of KKE,
Nikos Zakhariadis who, from his cell in a letter dated October 31, 1940, invited members
of the Communist Party and the Greek people to participate in the war of national
liberation - led by Metaxas government - against the Italian invasion. Greece will manage
to resist the Italians and to stop the invasion, but it will not be able to achieve the
same thing when Germany attacked. In April 1941, Greece was occupied by Nazi troops.
The German occupation will dissolve all dominant political institutions. The Greek
government went to Egypt and no traditional political group appears to favor the option of
the conflict with the occupiers. In September 1941, the KKE initiates the creation of the
National Liberation Front (EAM), which in turn in February 1942 creates armed resistance
groups, called the Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS), under the command of Thanassis
Klaras, better known under the alias Aris Velouchiotis. The ASM is the largest
organization of resistance in the country, developing an action both political and
military against the Nazi occupation.
Greece is finally released in October 1944 and the race for the succession has already
started. In early December 1944 a violent government crisis occurs. On December 3, in
Athens, during a protest against the marginalization of EAM in politics, the police fired,
killing 21 people and injured over a hundred. The seven ministers of the EAM in the
government resign. Fights start between Elas and the English landed in Athens in autumn,
especially hoping to get rid of the Communists. The English come out victorious. The
Varkiza agreement in February 1945 provides for the disarmament of Elas and pardons for
political crimes committed after December 3, 1944.
Immediately after disarmament begins the period of "white terror", where the fascist
elements, Germans collaborators and reactionaries persecute and murder of members and
supporters of EAM and the KKE. The government does not intervene to stop these terrorist
acts, which are ideological purges and political, and sometimes reprisals by family
members of employees killed by Elas (usually members of the security battalions [ 1 ] ).
The period of the White Terror will open the way to civil war. While partisan groups
spontaneously leaving the cities to resume the maquis, the Communist Party finally chose
the military action to end the political stalemate, but also to protect the members and
supporters of the ASM. A policy statement also announced the selection of abstention for
the elections of 31 March 1946.
The eve of elections, the Communist partisans attacked a police station in Litochoro
Pieria in Macedonia. During the following three years of war, the monarchist troops and
fascist methods use a "dirty war" to deprive the ADG supports: sweeps of the civilian
population, deportation, murder, torture, etc.
Partizanes ELAS during the war.
Anarchists facing war KKE
Anarchist ideas have spread before all the political and ideological currents of the
nineteenth century socialists in Greece. But anarchist groups set up at that time were not
able to last in time. The anarchists of the nineteenth and early twentieth part in some of
the first wildcat strikes, which sometimes lead to uprisings, such as that of minors in
1896 or that of Serifos in 1916.
The leader of that rebellion was the union Kostas Speras, who later lead a group of
independent trade unionists within the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) on a
line that had a lot in common with the anarcho-syndicalists, especially against the
political action of workers. The group, which met some anarchists, book battle to prevent
addiction of GSEE vis-à-vis the Greek Socialist Workers Party, which after some time in
the 1920s, becomes a Communist Party. This minority has been removed from the GSEE. That
was the end of attempts to establish a real anarchist pole within the workers' movement in
Greece.
From the middle of this decade anarchist presence is completely eliminated in the country
and does not reappear until the 1970s, in the last years of the military dictatorship. It
will develop especially during the period of the new regime in 1974 [ 2 ].
The dominance of the Communist Party and Stalinism from 1930 is then complete on the labor
movement and the revolutionary movement in the country.
The texts on anarchist resistance and civil war follow two directions: on one side a clear
narrative influenced by veteran Stinas Agis, became a Trotskyite anarchist, representative
of the current "Socialism or barbarism" and the other a positive vision the struggle of
the popular fighters for what they believed a better future.
Kostas Speras
Army Stalinist criminals ...
Stinas and small Trotskyist group, in which served for a time the philosopher Cornelius
Castoriadis before fleeing to France, represented the period of Nazi occupation according
to the Leninist model of "revolutionary defeatism" of the First World War. Transposed to
the Second World War, this perspective was the German soldiers of the Third Reich workers,
so class brothers of local workers, who must together transform the war into a revolution
against capitalism.
Stinas had the opportunity to develop his ideas in his book EAM-ELAS-Opla [ 3 ], published
in 1984. He criticized the national liberation organizations, presented as Stalinist
criminal organizations that kill innocent people for no reason outside the lust for power.
At the same time he denounced the ASM as the main responsible for the rescue of capitalism
and the political system of domination.
From his perspective, the EAM has helped save national unity and to lay the foundations
of a new national development when there was no one to do it. Finally, it insists that ASM
does not have a social discourse but favors only national liberation, with a deeper goal
of taking power to transform Greece into a protectorate of the USSR, another imperialist
power.
Much of the 1974 anarchist adopted, at least in part the speech. In the book's publication
period, the first democratic government of Andreas Papandreou acknowledged national
resistance and granted a pension resistant to integrate citizens left in the state and
representative institutions after decades of exclusion. The anarchist movement, at the
same time, he has chosen the global conflict with the political parties and the state,
which entailed stay beyond and outside of "national unity" manufactured. National
resistance that inspired previous generations was therefore nothing for anarchists of the
1980s, a matrix for some veterans who insidiously incorporate the left of representative
democratic system and heteronomy.
Conflicts with members and supporters of the KKE as intolerance of these to the
anti-authoritarian left, intensifying hatred against the Communist Party, associated with
this story. At the same time, the brutality with which the KKE members attack the
anarchists and autonomous, creates a compelling image of "Stalinist criminals." Finally,
the anarchist movement, very young, mainly derived from May 68, ignores the previous
generation of anarchists in Greece, lost in the mists of time, and looks for historical
roots and an imaginary shaping its history.
The movement therefore has partially adopted this narrative, which he nearest feels
ideologically, as all those condemning the KKE, and has developed organic links with the
perpetrators, as Stinas or Giannis Tamtakos former militant Trotskyite who also joined the
movement anarchist.
... Or popular resistance betrayed?
Unlike narrative, another approach will consider it as national resistance "popular
resistance of the poorest against foreign oppressors and local." This approach praises
armed action of the Greek rebels, making history, almost epic of liberation. While at the
same time, she criticized the leadership race by the KKE, betraying the honest struggle of
people for a better life.
The British, who wanted to totally eradicate the ASM used the same criticisms Stinas. For
Churchill, the resistance of Elas were thieves and brutal murderers. On the contrary, the
criticism of the absolutist Communist Party leadership did not bring so much about his
"criminal action" as told Stinas but rather on its "criminal inaction".
KKE's policy has indeed proved to be the best ally of the English and Greek bourgeoisie:
the signatures of Lebanon agreements [ 4 ], of Kazerta [ 5 ] and Varkiza [ 6 ] played a
perfidious and destructive role in the popular movement in Greece, paving the way for the
final defeat in the civil war.
The KKE was accused of having and not want to give to the fight against the Germans a
class content, subversive, to maintain the balance with the local bourgeoisie and the
British. In other words, the KKE did not make the struggle for social liberation, but for
national liberation.
This second view was formed and developed mainly in the anti-fascist culture of the
anti-authoritarian movement, addressing a wider audience, and while practicing violent
confrontation with neo-Nazis, to create a common imaginary origin, common action. We can
then associate anarchists in rebel National Resistance of EAM since the criteria to
support the action of the rebels are not ideological (which controls the fight or what
kind of society are we going to build?), But are pragmatic: the resistance is violent
conflict "natural" with the fascist invaders and their local partners.
The same argument justifies the civil war, seen as a way for EAM-ELAS fighters against
terrorism paramilitary groups whose crimes are not comparable to the resistance. Finally
the legitimacy to use similar means to achieve the revolutionary overthrow of claim also
involves the struggle that took place in the 1940s.
National Cold War and Liberation
The establishment of several national liberation fronts with Marxist-Leninist deserves
special mention, not only because it presaged a new fragmentation of the world into nation
states, but also because it was decisive for the historical development of world
revolutionary movement. The attitude of the Communist Party, who had under his dominion
EAM and Elas, during the German-Italian occupation of the kingdom of Greece, is typical of
all Stalinist parties.
Communist Party leaders have directed the People of that era left in a bloody struggle for
the realization of "national independence", ie the restoration of the nation-state,
controlled by a "dictatorship of the proletariat 'established and protected by the Soviet
Union. The ultimate goal was not reached, because Greece is now in the camp of England,
thus remaining outside the eastern bloc.
Note here that this aspect is reinforced by the argument that the ASM and the national
liberation movements are the last savior of the nation state, which defends Stinas, but
avoid his verbal excesses enthusiasts who brings him closer to the right. It is clear that
these issues are complex and that a closer analysis, he has to make, would be most useful
to better understand the revolutionary movement.

The CRIFA in Ljubljana reaffirms solidarity with refugees and migrants. Many of our
federations (especially in Europe, including the Mediterranean and the Balkans regions)
are involved in concrete solidarity with refugees by hosting people, helping them with
medicine, legal processes, developing self-organisation and organising demonstrations.
---- We fight against far-right activists who are taking advantage of the situation to
develop their xenophobic agendas. We oppose nation states, which are encouraging
nationalism, building walls and closing borders, the same states that support global
capitalism and free movement of money or trade agreements which exploit people inside
national borders. ---- In sight of this situation we also see good examples of solidarity
and we support these initiatives. Moreover, we continue to fight against the idea of
borders and to support freedom of movement in general. People must be able to move and
live wherever they want to.
At this moment, the media is focussed on war refugees (Syria) but we know that migration
will continue for many reasons. People have always moved to change their lives, whether it
is to escape bad situations or to try and improve their living conditions. We strive to
live together and share the world’s resources in the face of states, ideologies and
religions that create division and confrontation.

Yannis Vasilis Yaylal? was brought up as a proud, nationalist Turk. From a fascist
background, he joined the army in the 1990s, at a time when Turkey was waging its most
brutal attacks ever on its Kurdish population. Yannis was eager “to go east and fight the
Kurds.” After just a few months in the military, he was captured by Kurdistan Worker’s
Party (PKK) guerillas and spent two years as a prisoner of war. Yannis was completely
transformed by his experience. He now lives in Roboski in north Kurdistan (within
south-eastern Turkey), where he lives as a Kurdish solidarity activist. He is also part of
the Conscientious Objectors Association, which gives solidarity to those who refuse to do
mandatory military service in Turkey. In January 2016 he was sentenced to seven months in
prison for ‘alienating people from military service’. We met Yannis in Roboski in July
2015 and interviewed him about his life.

About LGBTI Peace Initiative ---- LGBTI Peace Initiative is a group of activists who have
been involved in various social and grassroots movements with anti-sexist, anti-fascist
and anti-capitalist agendas. After the Suruç Bombing on July 20, 2015, the war between
Turkish state and the Kurdish Freedom Movement escalated, the politics of the ruling party
AKP (Justice and Development Party) lead to the death, injury, imprisonment and torture of
our friends. ---- With the elections in June 7, 2015, a pro-Kurdish party, HDP, gained 80
of 550 MPs, despite attacks against the party and its supporters during electoral campaign
period, including multiple arson attacks to party buildings and a bombing in the rally in
Diyarbak?r, on June 5, killing 5 people. The visibility gained by the minority and
progressive groups of Turkey with the success of HDP frightened AKP, which lost its
absolute majority in the parliament for the first time since 2002, the year when they
first came into power. Nonetheless, none of the parties in the parliament were able to
come up with a coalition, hence the parliament not being able to function lead to another
general election on November 1, 2015.
Right after the deadly suicide bombing in Suruç district of Urfa, a town 10 km from
Kobanî, Turkish government one sidedly ended the ceasefire with the outlawed Workers’
Party of Kurdistan (PKK). The bombing lead to the death of 33, the majority of whom were
university students. On 10 October, in Ankara, another bombing lead to the death of 102.
Those who were killed in this attack, were gathered for the “Labour, Peace and Democracy
March” to protest against the growing conflict between the Turkish Armed Forces and PKK.
After highly controversial elections, AKP once again gained the power in 1 November 2015,
as the ruling party.
As the legal political activity of HDP grew weaker under war conditions, PKK guerrillas
took the initiative as Turkish Army continued bombing the rural areas and mountain bases.
PKK started declaring autonomy in the cities of Turkish Kurdistan. Turkish army attacked
civilians as well as the PKK members, with devastating and ruthless military operations in
the cities. In 7 cities, more than 60 curfews have been declared since June 2015, lasting
for more than 100 days in some areas. Humanitarian aid groups were prohibited to access
the wounded civilians who get caught in the crossfire, the wounded were left to die. The
official numbers do not reflect the correct number of casualties (both civilian and
armed), as observers and journalists were denied access to the conflict areas, with
threats of deportation or physical force. The locals who communicated with the press had
to take the risk of brutal consequences. According to the Turkish Human Rights Foundation
(TIHV), at least 310 civilians were killed in the conflict during the various curfews
imposed in parts of the region between August 2015 and March 2016. As of 16 August 2015,
at least 1,642,000 people in the curfew areas are deprived of their fundamental rights,
including right to life and health care. 355,000 people had to leave their homes as a
result of the conflicts. At least 59 unidentified bodies were buried by the state in Cizre
district of S?rnak.
Instead of employing peaceful means to respond to these conflicts, AKP used ISIS as a
means to weaken the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Syria and let ISIS forces to
have access to weapons and military equipment, health care in hospitals in Turkey, and
allowed ISIS to recruit people to join their forces by opening the border between Syria
and Turkey.
The free press is the biggest enemy of AKP in this war, so journalists Can Dündar and
Erdem Gül are now facing terrorism charges for publishing documents and footage proving
the transportation of weapons to ISIS soldiers under the supervision of Turkish
Intelligence Agency (MIT). They were arrested and imprisoned for a while. They are
released now, but there are still 29 journalists who are in prison in Turkey.
AKP also favoured the repression of free speech: In January 2016, a group of academics
called for a petition to the campaign “We will not be a party to this crime,” claiming
this war was a crime committed by the Turkish state. More than 2000 academics signed the
petition, and Erdogan accused them for being terrorists. With Erdogan’s call, the
academics were with terror charges and four of them were arrested and have been held in
prison since then. Their case is still on trial.
Recently, with a “decree” of Erdogan, the definition of terror in Turkish penal system
will be extended so as to include “terrorist activities without arms,” which clearly
targets to silence those who speak up for peace in non-violent ways despite the oppression
and the threats they face.
CALL FOR ACTION AND SOLIDARITY
Creating international pressure on Turkish government is crucial for the peace talks to
start again, a ceasefire between the Turkish State and PKK to be declared, and curfews in
the Southeast of Turkey to end.
Please share the information above, and organize your own solidarity actions.
The asylum seekers face threats of deportation as a consequence of the refugee agreement
made between the EU and Turkey. We should break the silence of the EU-member states and
their institutions, show them that they shouldn’t turn a blind eye to this violence and
human rights violations with the aim of stopping the refugees coming to Europe. Refugees
are a result of this war, in which Turkey plays an important part.
SAY NO TO WAR IN TURKEY, SAY NO TO WAR IN SYRIA!

The workplace branch of the CNT-AIT (an anarcho-syndicalist union in Spain) at Doctors
Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Spain is fighting against the
precariousness of its fundraising staff. MSF has been discriminating against migrant
workers and has also included performance-related clauses in the contracts of all of its
fundraising workers. ---- MSF has discriminated against two foreign workers. The company
had to change the contracts of every worker in 2014. As the company was using temporary
contracts in an illegal way, it was forced to give everyone to permanent contracts.
Everyone except two foreign workers. These workers only have temporary visa and work
permit. They have worked for MSF for three years now. MSF HR told the workers that they
didn't want them to use the contract with MSF to get a permanent visa in Spain.
The contracts of the fundraising staff includes clauses related to performance.
Fundraisers recruit new members on the streets who in turn pay the fees that finance MSF.
Workers are required to recruit an unreasonable amount of members. Many of the fundraisers
have faced disciplinary actions for not achieving the target imposed by MSF. Disciplinary
actions have even ended in redundancies.
The workers are not going to accept more injustices, abuses, discrimination or unionist
repression. On 18 May a first trial will take place related to this case. The FAU calls on
MSF to get rid of perfomance-related clauses and give contracts to the two workers.

On May 1st, around 50 people showed up to a demonstration in Chicago organized by Chicago
Anarchist Black Cross. The march started in Douglas Park on Chicago’s west side and took
the streets headed northeast towards downtown. Along the way, the march passed the youth
detention center and made some noise for those locked inside. They were met with loud
banging on the windows from those locked up inside. ---- Unfortunately, due to police
presence gaining numbers, the march had to move on quickly and continue heading towards
downtown. As the march moved onward toward the downtown business district, the police
presence increased significantly (what a surprise!). Upon reaching the downtown area, the
march stopped to do a noise demo in front of the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Those
inside banged on the windows and flashed the lights in their cells for almost 20 minutes
in response. After showing their solidarity with those locked inside the federal prison,
the march decided to keep moving. Seeing the increased police presence, it was decided
that it may be best to go meet with a larger march which was rallying in front of Trump
Tower. Unfortunately, the march never made it there.
Soon after leaving the Metropolitan Correctional Center and being pushed on the sidewalk,
police kettled the march and violently arrested 19 individuals. Police injured a number of
people, with one person even being sent to the hospital. All were charged with
misdemeanors for obstruction of justice and one was charged with a felony for destruction
of government property. All individuals charged with misdemeanors were released later that
night and are currently awaiting trial.
After being held for almost 48 hours, the individual charged with a felony appeared at
bond court and was given a ridiculous $100,000 bond with an electronic monitor. At the
time of writing, the individual charged with a felony was awaiting release from house
arrest after posting the $10,000 needed for bond. Thank you to the Chicago Community Bond
Fund for all their help with fundraising to make that possible!
While the march was violently attacked by the Chicago Police, it did not take away from
the purpose of the march. The marchers effectively showed their solidarity with those
behind prison walls, reclaimed the streets, and made their presence known in the city
where it all began. In addition, when it came time to support those who were arrested,
people really came together in a beautiful way. While there were successes in some areas,
we were also left with a lot of questions.
How can we be better prepared to defend ourselves in the streets? Knowing that Chicago
police are notoriously violent and oppressive, how does that figure into our overall
tactical strategy? Are we better off joining in with larger liberal marches rather than
being brutally attacked on our own terms? Many of these things could have been addressed
by having better communication before taking to the streets. Moving forward, it’s
important we communicate our strategies with one another prior to actions taking place and
that we help one another learn how to use the tools at our disposal to defend ourselves.
By doing so, we can increase our safety in the streets and defend against the snatch and
grab tactics of the police.
