The Colosseum restoration project update

On the 22nd of June, Diego Della Valle gave a press conference in Rome revealing the details of the largest-scale excavation iconic antiquities monument, the larger-than-life Colosseum has seen in millenia. Below is the detailed press release explaining the nuances of the restoration and the forthcoming foundation of the creation of a dedicated non-profit, "Amici del Colosseo" association. Presentation of the restoration project of the Colosseum the Tod’s Group, a leading brand representative of made in Italy, is supporting the restoration of the Colosseum, the renowned symbol of Italian history and culture. This is a project of patronage, which will not have any economic or advertising/ commercial return for the company.

The “intervention plan” for the restoration of Flavian amphitheatre :

  1. The arches will have replaced fornice gate closures. 
  2. The restoration of the northern and southern prospectus. 
  3. The restoration of the ambulatory. 
  4. The restoration of the hypogea. 
  5. The retrofit code compliance and implementation of standard equipment. 
  6. The creation and repositioning from internal to an external visitors’ service and reception area. 

The Tod’s Group is also committed to the creation of a non profit “amici del colosseo” association, promoting the restoration project and other initiatives, with a social purpose only. This outreach is dedicated mainly towards the youth and the elderly in bringing them closer to this monument. 

The “intervention plan” for the restoration of the Flavian amphitheatre is a project requested by the government commissioner for Rome’s archaeological areas and ancient Ostia in collaboration with the superintendent for Rome’s archaeological heritage and financed by Tod’s. 

The plan provides: 

  1. The replacement of the actual locking system of arches with gates/railings.
  2.  The restoration of the northern and southern prospectus.
  3.  The restoration of the ambulatory. 
  4. The restoration of the hypogea.
  5.  The retrofit compliance and implementation of standard equipment.
  6.  The creation and repositioning from internal to an external 

Visitors’ service and reception area 

The entire plan mentioned above requires a precise schedule in order to keep the monument open to the public without any interruption, as the monument attracts over 5 million visitors a year. 

The projects relating to the gates, to the restoration of prospectuses and the creation of a service centre are by contract. 

Specifics include: 

  • There will be 84 implemented panels including the gates at the main entrance, internal distribution and in vehicular or more restricted access areas.
  • The restoration project of the northern prospect will intervene on 31 arches. The surface, made entirely of travertine, is approximately 13,600 square meters (including the bottling of the arches). The new cleaning system has been approved by the superior institute for the conservation and restoration. It includes, the cleaning recur to the use of water spray. The spraying is carried out at room temperature, without pressure or any additional substances or solvents. The system is able to remove loose deposits of dust and dissolve black crust while leaving the patina of time and traces of color. There is a team of about 10 skilled technicians that will be working simultaneously on each area. The new centre service will be built in the existing embankment on the coliseum’s south side of the square.
  • The functions currently present in the monument will be organized in about 1,600 square meters within a 30 meters diameter area. The reception, the ticket office and the bookshop will be placed in this environment, while the service functions will be spread all around. The project has been approved by the Rome’s ministry and the municipality offices.
