A programme has been launched on the instructions of the President Mahinda Rajapaksato conserve the frescos of Sigiriya. The Archeological Department says that under this programme the frescos will be observed on a daily basis.
It was in 1875, an Academic named Ris Davids discovered the Sigiriya frescos for the first time. The Archaeologists believe that it belongs to 5th century. It was King Kashyapa who built the fortress on the Sigiriya rock and established a Kingdom there. The academics point out that the Sigiriya frescos are contemporary to Ajantha frescos of India. However, Ananda Kumaraswamy has said that it is a creation of local artists, and it is also believed that the thempara system has been used in creating these frescos.
Some time ago the Archeological Department claimed that there is a cloudy nature over the frescos. Research carried out found that this has happened because of chemicals used in the creation of frescos have got subjected to environmental exposure. However, this matter did not affect the frescos much.
An official has been appointed under the instructions of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to check the frescos on a daily basis. The Italian Chemist Fabricio Bandini has submitted a complete report about the chemical compositions of the frescos. His report says that organic colouring has been used for creation of these frescos and hence it remains unaffected for a long time.
The Archeological Department states that they dedicate themselves to conserve the frescos, which is a world heritage, for the benefit of the future generation.
