Meeting Whoopi Goldberg and more...

I met with Whoopi Goldberg on Thursday (June 2nd) at ABC Studios in New York. I can't discuss the details, but the meeting had to do with my work. It went well. *Smile*. Whoopi said that she was a huge fan of science fiction and that one of her favorite authors was Octavia Butler. I don't think any of this is much of a secret, really. Tor.com recently did a blog post called Whoopi Goldberg is an MVP of Onscreen SFF, and that summed things up rather well. So the fact that the cosmos brought our paths together is a beautiful thing.

While in NY, I also got to meet Betsy Wollheim (editor of Who Fears Death, also publisher and co-owner of DAW Books) in person for the first time! That was quite memorable. And though I'd just seen my YA editor Sharyn November at  Wiscon (a Feminist Science Fiction convention held in Madison, Wisconsin), it was really great to see her again so soon after.

I got to meet the folks at DAW and grace the buildings that housed Penguin and DAW. And then late that night, I went to the top of the Empire State Building with Betsy where we learned that there are crazy moths that zoom around the building's powerful lights. They reminded me of the Ogoni ants in Zahrah the Windseeker and the white owls in The Shadow Speaker, who happily dwell at the top of the plant towers of Ginen. All in all, my second trip to New York City rocked.
