Turkey on Sunday put forward 27 of its cultural areas be included in the "UNESCO World Heritage List."
The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism said an application was also made to put Bergama of the Aegean province of İzmir, St. Pierre of the southern province of Hatay, Eşrefoğlu Mosque in the Central Anatolian province of Konya and the Göbeklitepe Archaeological area of the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa on the temporary list.
Nine centers of Turkey's cultural riches are currently in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Turkey had 23 cultural areas previously included in the UNESCO "temporary list," which includes areas that are set move onto to the actual list. Currently, there are 704 cultural properties around the world listed in UNESCO’s permanent list, 180 natural properties, and 27 mixed properties.
The proposed inclusion of Turkey's 27 cultural areas, which are currently on the temporary list, is expected to be taken up at the 35th meeting of the UNESCO committee which will convene June 19-29.
