Senate hearing examines Native American language teaching

On May 26 the Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing on Native American language teaching. The hearing, entitled In Our Way: Expanding the Success of Native Language and Culture-Based Education, featured testimony from a number of experts, including Jana Harcharek, Director of Inupiaq Education for the North Slope Borough School District.

You can view a web cast of the hearing from the Senate page. Harcharek's testimony starts just after minute 89:00.

Chairman Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) points out that only 175 of more than 300 Native American languages are still spoken today.
