Excavation work at the Longquan Mountain Heritage Site, which belongs to the Old Stone Age and is located at Luanshan County in Henan’s Luoyang City, was finished on April 24, according to dahe.cn.
According to experts' study, the heritage site belongs to the late Old Stone Age and dates back to about 50,000 to 30,000 years from now, a murky but important period for studying the origin of modern human being.
In the site, archaeologists found signs that fire was used, which is unique among the sites discovered in Henan Province from the same period.
In addition, a total number of more than 1,000 stone tools, animal teeth fossils and animal bone fossils were found in the cave. And on some bone fossils, archaeologists found some bite and cut marks as well as some marks suspected to be the result of processing using primitive tools.
Experts said the site is rare among similar sites throughout the country because it contains fire pits, stone tools and fossils all in one place. It provides important materials for studying modern man's behavioral characteristics — especially for studying the origin of modern humans.
From the discoveries it was also learned that the ancient people who lived in the caves likely had the ability to adapt to climate and physical features, and they could hunt animals too.
