Archaeologists have discovered an antique well, dating back to 4,300 BC in the center of Sukhumi, on land allocated for construction of the Russian embassy in Abkhazia.
As reported by Interfax, it is built of river boulders with no mortar, its depth is 5 meters. At the bottom of the pit there are neatly laid out flat boulders.
Archaeologists believe that the well supplied the inhabitants of the ancient Greek colony Dioscuri with cool drinking water. The colony was located on the site of the present capital of Abkhazia.
