White Dog was sitting in her driving throne. We were all headed for home after dropping Michael off to volunteer at the Ranch and enjoying a mid-day hike in the scrub. Suddenly, WD recognized the song on the radio and turned to me. "That's the song you sing to me all of the time!" she said. Steve and I sang along to the rest of the tune and then it was my turn to gasp in amazement as the announcer pointed out that "this is the 40th, yes FORTIETH! anniversary of the release of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel's greatest work ever."
Really? 40 years? I thought about the song and its perfect message and soaring melody and about how many different times in my life that song has been incredibly meaningful. White Dog leaned her head against my arm as Steve and I discussed what a perfect hymn to real friendship...and love...this song really is.
White Dog looked from Steve to me and then back at TOWD and AWD and sighed. "Don't be sad, mi corazon," I said. "It is a beautiful song." She snuggled back against me and whispered, "I was just wishing that every one could have a friend like the one in the song, sometimes it seems like people are so lonely."
