White Dog looked at me as we sat together thinking about the day. “Two Thousand is a lot of stories and adventures,” she said. “Precious White One,” I responded, “two thousand posts is your autobiography. It is your life from the moment you came to live with us, told day-by-day, shared milestone by milestone. It is a virtual you.”
This was our very first entry, do you remember:
June 24, 2005...the Beginning
White Dog and I debated the virtues of the trusty sidekick. "You do understand," I sneered condenscendingly, "that Lassie is a fictional character--a figment of some fat old white dude's hyperactive imagination!"
"Ah, but what you don't understand," she yipped, "is that the need for loyal companionship is hardwired into the human psyche. That's why you are sitting here now."
Falling into a silent truce, she licked my face as I stroked the soft fur of her ears.
“You were so tiny and curious about the world. We barked on the blog so you would feel connected and it took a long time to be found. But slowly your story was read and then followed and we read and followed and commented. Our lives became entwined in a community.”
And now two thousand days later or more, we look back and are overwhelmed at how much we have shared…good times, like our Recommitment Ceremony or Rescuing Quinn, or your sisters joining us, or your Hollywood debut in Shakespeare. We have felt the Power of the Paw during tough times, when I was so sick, or you went through neutering. Our friends have been there with love and support during sad times and with woofs, purrs and cheers of joy to celebrate. Their words have encouraged us and, hopefully, we have returned the gift with added insight or wisdom or hope or happiness to theirs. We have accomplished great things with their help and have helped others change the world one step at a time. We have been a member of a community that shares, cares, and acts on making a difference…and have been enriched, stretched to reach higher, and blessed by it.
“I love you momma, for helping me be part of something bigger than myself,” White Dog softly woo’d.
By the grace of the Universe, I hope White Dog will be with me for us to reach Five Thousand posts but I am grateful everyday for her…and for your kind acceptance of our humble story. Thank you, friends.
From now until midnight tomorrow night (White Dog’s Barkday) we are holding a Comment-A-Thon. Every comment left means more donation money will be sent to fund Canine Cancer Research and other causes. Please let us know you have been by (at least once)!
