A set of well-preserved dinosaur fossils was recently unearthed in the suburban area of Qijiang County in Chongqing. The set of fossils has been preliminary identified by archaeologists as the remains of a sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period 150 million years ago.
According to sources, the sauropod dinosaur was the largest terrestrial animal during the Jurassic period.
The excavation site of the dinosaur fossils is located at the No.1 Group of Heba Village on Gunan Street, Qijiang County, also known as the "land rim." It is a set of relatively well-preserved dinosaur fossils, an archaeologist said.
Archaeologists began to excavate the fossils on Nov. 29 and surprises came one after another during the excavation. In accordance with part of the fossils that has been excavated, related experts preliminary determined that the fossils were from a sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Jurassic period 150 million years ago.
According to sources, Qijiang County is rich in geological resources and has the largest dinosaur footprint group in southwestern China. Qijiang County has relatively great influence nationwide due to its highly serried dinosaur footprints and unique dinosaur species.
Currently, Qijiang County is working on an application to establish the "Chongqing Qijiang Petrified Wood – Dinosaur Footprint National Geological Park."
