Authorities in southern Peru's Cusco region have agreed that Casa Concha, owned by San Antonio Abad University, is the best place to temporarily house thousands of archaeological pieces that Yale University has promised to return early next year.
"At the moment Casa Concha, located one block from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, is an appropriate place to keep the Inca pieces," said Governor Hugo Gonzales Sayan, who noted that the Andean city is filled with joy and optimism after hearing Yale's decision.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia announced Friday that the U.S.-based university has agreed to return thousands of artifacts that had been taken away from the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu almost a hundred years ago.
Gonzales Sayan said the current restoration project will be finished within the coming months, "what we need to do is modify it to properly house the artifacts," he said.
He also urged local authorities to carefully choose the place where the 46,000 items - including mummies, ceramics and gold and bronze artifacts - will be housed.
