Ancient temples discovered in landfill in Peru

In the jungle in the north of the country, a group of Peruvian archaeologists have discovered two temples dating back more than four thousand years.

Mach Pichu, Peru According to the scientists, they are probably the oldest known temple buildings in Peru.

Local newspapers report that there used to be a landfill on the spot where they found the ancient architectural monuments.

From the beginning of the excavations the scientists were being helped by local residents who assisted them in moving huge stones weighing up to 200 kilograms.

Human skeletons found in both the temples indicate that the buildings were not abandoned and that they had been used for sacrifices during the past 800 years.

Archaeologists believe that the temples belong to the Brakamoros culture which incorporated several tribal groups inhabiting the territory that was formerly part of the modern Peruvian regions of Cajamarca and Amazonas, and the province of Zamora Chinchipe in neighboring Ecuador, according to RIA Novosti.
