Caldecott Dig Unearths Wealth Of Fossils

Digging the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is turning up a prehistoric snapshot of the Bay Area, complete with fossils that could be millions of years old.

A fossil found at the Caldecott dig site. Among the hard hat brigade at the construction site are paleontologists. The fossil scientists say the project has uncovered a variety of interesting finds.

"So far we found a large camel. A camel of this period which is about eleven million-years-old, about the size of Giraffes," said Josh Wyatt, a paleontologist at PaleoResource.

They have also found teeth from ancient camels and horses, rodent teeth and a human leg bone.

"So far we have found over five hundred samples," said Wyatt.
