300-million-year old shell fossil found in central China These black stones were embedded with numerous round objects. The objects have clear figures and regular veins.

"The stones have been excavated by cutting into a mountain. I think they are ancient fossils," Liu Huimin, a worker of the factory, said.

These stones are shell fossils, and they were formed 300 million years ago, Liu Xinmin, an expert at the Liuyang Cultural Relic Bureau, confirmed after careful observation.

Liu said these small shells were believed to have lived in fresh water. As of now, many similar shell fossils have been found in three towns of Liuyang City. They are Gugang Town, Yanghua Town and Gaoping Town.

Moreover, these fossils prove that Liuyang was once underwater in ancient times. These shell fossils provide necessary information to research the weather and the geology in Liuyang.
